Miami Boat Show 2025 dates

This is the planned schedule for the event from February 12-16, 2025:

WED (2/12) - 10 AM - 6 PM
THURS (2/13) - 10 AM - 6 PM
FRI (2/14) - 10 AM - 7 PM
SAT (2/15) - 10 AM - 7 PM
SUN (2/16) - 10 AM - 5 PM.

It will be held at the Miami Beach Convention Center where you will find boats up to 49 feet, engine manufacturers, marine accessories, electronics, and retail pavilions.

For those interested in mechanics, there is also the possibility of trying out over 75 test boats at sea from different manufacturers and engine builders.

Tax implications of owning a Boat

Owning a yacht can come with some pretty great tax perks, often even better than the deductions a regular business on land can take for its expenses.

One way chosen by many is to place the yacht into a rental program to generate income. The good news is that doing so does not mean you can no longer use the boat for personal recreation. U.S. law still permits personal use as long as the beneficial owner's use is properly structured. 

By turning your boat into a business, you may be able to use allowable deductions, such as depreciation, to reduce your taxable income. This is also known as “active yacht ownership.”

Buying a yacht is a completely different thing than buying a luxury car or a luxury property. It has an international feel that you don't get with other large purchases. One of the first things to decide is where you want to "flag" or register the yacht. Why? Because it allows the owner to flag his yacht in a country other than the country of citizenship of the ultimate beneficiary.

A Yacht as a Second Home or Residence

You can explore a different way to handle your luxury yacht and still take advantage of some tax benefits by figuring out if it can be considered a second home or residence, as long as you're a U.S. fiscal resident.

For a boat to count as a second home, it needs to have at least one sleeping area, a kitchen, and a toilet. If your yacht ticks all these boxes, you could qualify for a mortgage interest deduction. Just a heads up: according to IRS Publication 936, if even one of these features is missing, you can't treat it as a second home, no matter how much time you spend there or how you make it work.

If you're thinking about renting out your boat and also want to treat it as a second home, you need to show that you’ve used it personally. To do this, you have to keep track of how much you use the boat, making sure it's for at least 14 days or 10% of the days it's rented out—whichever is more.
